AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR VISITS

Meeting the authors and illustrators who create their favorite books can be an exciting experience for children and adults alike. Many Just Us Books authors and illustrators are available for school visits, workshops, panels and other special events that help make books come alive.
Wade and Cheryl Hudson Share the Story
With dual roles as publishers and authors, Wade and Cheryl Hudson offer unique perspectives into the world of children’s literature, education, diversity, publishing and entrepreneurship. Their areas of expertise span many areas, including:

• Black book market
• Children’s literature
• Multicultural children’s publishing
• Children’s book writing, marketing, and distribution
• Diversity in education
• Building a business
• Marketing to an under-served or niche market

The Hudsons speak at schools, industry conferences, panels and other events. Recently they were commissioned to create and facilitate workshops for Freedom Schools, operated nation-wide by the Children’s Defense Fund. Their presentation topics have included:

• Introducing Multicultural Literature to Young Readers for parents or educators

 SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
JUST US BOOKS, INC.

Just Us Books is the nation's premier independent publisher of Black-interest books for young people. Our list of titles includes picture books, chapter books for middle readers, poetry, non-fiction series, biographies and young adult fiction. Our books focus primarily on the culture, history and contemporary experiences of African Americans.

Just Us Books is currently accepting queries for chapter books and middle reader titles only. 
We are not considering any other works at this time.

What we are looking for:
* fiction and nonfiction manuscripts targeted to readers, ages 8 to 12 
* realistic, contemporary characters
* compelling plot lines that introduce conflict and resolution
* high-interest readability
* cultural authenticity

To submit a manuscript for consideration, please send only the following:
* a query letter pitching us your manuscript
* 1-2 page synopsis of your manuscript
* 3-5 sample pages of your manuscript
* a brief author bio that includes any previously published work
* self-addressed stamped envelope for our written response

MARIMBA BOOKS

Marimba Books is a multicultural children's book imprint that publishes board books, picture books, chapter books and books for middle readers. Marimba Books was established to produce books for children that reflect our country's diversity and these titles include settings ranging from a bustling urban millennial block party in NYC to rural Georgia in 1937; from cobblestone streets in New Orleans' French Quarter to a community park in the suburbs. Marimba Books aims not only to entertain, but to educate and empower as well.      

Marimba Books is currently accepting queries for  chapter books  only. We are not considering poetry or any other types of manuscripts at this time.
            
What we are looking for:
* fiction and nonfiction manuscripts targeted to readers, ages 8-12
* realistic, contemporary characters
* compelling plot lines that introduce conflict and resolution (Please consider the targeted age)
* high-interest readability
* cultural authenticity

To submit a manuscript or art sample for consideration, please send only the following:

Please do not send unsolicited manuscripts. We do not accept nor will we be held responsible for unsolicited manuscripts. Just Us Books and Marimba do not respond to queries sent via e-mail, fax or phone. Such queries will not receive a response. All queries must be sent by mail only. Due to the volume of submissions we receive, our editorial department is unable to verify receipt of a query, or status of a submission. Receipt verification must be done via certified mail, Federal Express, UPS or other similar services.

If we are interested in your manuscript or art sample, you can expect to receive a written response from us within 12-14 weeks.  If you do not hear from us within six months, you may assume that your work does not fit our immediate needs. We are not able to return manuscripts or provide a personal response to each submission. All submissions are considered non-returnable.

Note to artists: All art samples will be kept on file for consideration of future projects.
      
We encourage previously unpublished writers and artists to utilize the public library and the Internet to research publishing and how to get started in the industry. A wealth of information is also available through trade journals such as Publishers Weekly. Please also take advantage of continuing education courses, writing workshops, and publishing seminars offered by local colleges, and professional literary organizations. Periodically, Just Us Books also offers publishing workshops.
